Plantlife
At the park, swimmers and surfers on their way to
the beach cross through a community of beach grasses,
sea oats and creeping vines. Please walk only on
the boardwalks. They protect feet from sandspurs,
stinging nettles, prickly pear cactus and also protect
the plants that anchor the dunes from being trampled.
Behind the dunes lie maritime hammocks (seaside
hardwood forests), which are rapidly disappearing
outside the park because of demand for land development.
A 20-minute, self-guided trail leads through a hammock
of wind-pruned live oaks, cabbage palms, sea grapes
and strangler figs.
Park Activities
Picnicking
The park has 5 covered pavilions that are available
either on a first-come, first-served basis or by
reservation. |
